From past to present: The journey of our club.
From humble beginnings on a local field to a thriving hub of sport, culture, and community.
The roots of Oriental Sport Club trace back to 1965, when a small group of athletes in the town of Galt—now known as Cambridge, Ontario—came together to play their beloved sport, Futebol. What began as friendly matches on a field known as Campo de Maria Amelia, just half a kilometre from our current home, quickly grew into something greater.
Fueled by passion for “the beautiful game” and a strong sense of community, these friends dreamed of building something lasting. Their vision soon evolved beyond the field, sparking the creation of a club that celebrated not only Futebol, but also Portuguese culture and heritage.
In 1966, the Oriental Sport Club proudly appointed its first Board of Directors:
-
President: João Botelho
-
Vice President: Tiago Lananjeiro
-
Treasurer: Henrique Correira
-
Secretary: Alvaro Borges
-
Directors at Large: Manuel Inácio and Antonio Sousa
Choosing a name for the new club was not without debate. Many wished to honour Portugal’s iconic teams—Benfica, Porto, and Sporting. Ultimately, with the guidance of Fr. Padre Cunha of Our Lady of Fatima and Senhor Henrique Correia, the name Oriental was chosen, inspired by a Portuguese newspaper that connected immigrants across the globe.
By October 1965, Oriental Sport Club was officially founded, and in 1966, the team played its first match. What started as a Futebol hub for Portuguese immigrants soon grew into a cornerstone of the community.
Today, Oriental Sport Club is a proud not-for-profit organization that honours our heritage while embracing the future. Beyond Futebol, we are a home for Sport & Wellness, Heritage & Culture, and Banquet & Food Services. Guided by Portuguese traditions of community and Canadian values of inclusivity, we continue to build a safe, supportive, and vibrant environment for our Members, Volunteers, and Players.

These enthusiastic friends continued generating ideas, and these ideas led to a community based club focused on Futebol and Cultural initiatives; the birth of the Oriental Sport Club.
